A press-on nail can look beautiful and still feel uncomfortable when the size is wrong. Measuring each natural nail before ordering or applying a set helps reduce side gaps, skin pressure, and unnecessary filing.
What you need
- A flexible measuring tape or a small strip of transparent tape
- A fine-tip pen
- A ruler marked in millimeters
- A note for recording all ten nails
Measure the widest part of every nail
Place the flexible tape across the widest part of the natural nail, following its curve from one sidewall to the other. Record the width in millimeters. If you use transparent tape, mark both sidewalls, remove the tape, place it flat on the ruler, and measure between the marks.
Measure the left and right hands separately. Matching fingers can have different widths, especially the thumbs.
Compare your measurements with the size chart
Use the product’s current size chart rather than assuming that a familiar size label will be identical across every brand or nail shape. When a measurement falls between two sizes, the slightly larger option can usually be adjusted carefully at the side edge. A nail that is too small cannot cover the missing width.
Check the fit before using adhesive
Lay out all ten press-ons in order and test each one without adhesive. The press-on should cover the natural nail from sidewall to sidewall without resting on the surrounding skin. It should sit close to the cuticle area without being pushed into it.
Shape and curve also affect fit
Width is only one part of sizing. A flatter natural nail and a strongly curved press-on may leave gaps even when the millimeter measurement is correct. Likewise, a very flat press-on can create pressure on a more curved nail. Test the curve and comfort before applying the full set.
Common sizing mistakes
- Measuring only one hand
- Rounding every measurement down
- Choosing a nail that touches the skin
- Applying adhesive before checking all ten nails
- Assuming every shape uses the same size
After sizing, follow our press-on nail application and removal guide. For questions about materials, reuse, and wear variables, read the wear and care FAQ.

Frequently asked questions
Should I size up or down between press-on nail sizes?
Choose the slightly larger size and carefully refine the side edge if needed. A press-on that is too small cannot cover the full nail width and may feel tight.
Do both hands use the same press-on nail sizes?
Not always. Matching fingers can differ in width, so measure and record all ten nails separately.
